Karaoke originated in Japan and has become a favorite pastime across the globe and for people of all ages. Here are some amazing fun facts about this super popular activity which has taken the world by storm.

Karaoke was born in a Japanese town called Kobe when a band failed to show up for a gig in a bar. The innovative owner played some music and asked his customers to come up and sing.

The word Karaoke means ‘Empty Orchestra’ in Japanese.

There are over 100,000 karaoke bars in China alone.

The Guinness World Record for longest karaoke marathon by an individual lasted 101 hr, 59 minutes and 15 seconds. Singer Leonardo Polverelli broke the record in Pesaro, Italy, in September 2011. During the event Polverelli sang a total of 1,295 songs!

The most requested song at Karaoke Bars across the world is “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson.

The largest worldwide karaoke session consisted of 160,000 participants.

Japanese businessmen sometimes perform karaoke to impress clients, and even hire professional singers to help them hone their performance -- and close that deal.

The first Karaoke World Championship was in 2003 and has since become a huge annual event featuring competitors from all over the globe. Many Karaoke Champions go on to secure record deals.

The 4th week in April is National Karaoke week in the United States.

Some karaoke machines in Japan not only rates the performance of the singer, but also tell the singer how many calories were burnt during their performance!
