While we are expressing love through our new tradition, have you ever wondered where the original tradition of Valentine’s Day came from? Valentine’s Day is said to have originated during ancient Roman times when Emperor Claudius II was fighting many wars and needed a stronger army.
Many men did not want to be soldiers and preferred to be at home with their wives and families. As a result, Emperor Claudius decided to cancel all marriages! He believed if men were not able to marry, they would ignore the women and want to fight in battle. Legend has it, that a priest by the name of Valentine continued to wed young lovers against the Emperor's commands. Soon after Valentine was discovered, he was arrested and brought before the Emperor. While he was in prison, he sent out letters to his friends and asked to be prayed for by writing Remember your Valentine.
Many believe the holiday is celebrated in honor of the late priest who risked his life in the name of love. With many myths and stories of this beloved holiday we are happy to say that we will continue to celebrate with the gift of song. Do you have a favorite love song?
